Chapel Hill - Chauncy Hall community raises money for the Bristol Lodge Soup Kitchen

On June 1, 2012 the CH-CH community gathered together for an event that raised money for a local food bank and raised awareness about hunger in the community.
“Empty Bowls” is a grassroots effort to fight hunger on a national and international level. It involves making handcrafted bowls and exchanging them for cash or canned food donations. Over 200 ceramic bowls were crafted by the students and faculty; the proceeds from the sale of the bowls were donated to the Bristol Lodge Soup Kitchen in Waltham, MA. The school community achieved 100% student and faculty participation and offered opportunities to get involved beyond creating the bowls themselves. In addition to buying the bowls, there was a “Chili Cook-Off” with faculty, staff and student participants, meant to spice up the experience of the Empty Bowls event. In addition to the 125 cans of food donated, the Empty Bowls project raised $1337.00 in total cash for Bristol Lodge.
From the Bristol Lodge Soup Kitchen website: “Every night, rain or shine, workday or holiday, between 60 and 110 people come to the kitchen for a hot, nutritious meal prepared and served by volunteers. In addition to our hot meal program, 18,000 sandwiches are prepared annually for the homeless.” Though the Bristol Lodge Soup Kitchen has a busy schedule, they make sure that everyone that walks through their doors leaves with a full stomach.
As the school year came to a close, the CH-CH community was thrilled to come together as a community to give back to those in need.
