    CH-CH Teachers' Inspirational Surprise

CH-CH students received something unexpected this holiday season, as their teachers surprised them with a personal message about how the student has been an inspiration to them. The emotional messages and reactions were recorded as part of the #InspirationVideo project, which can be seen here:

“Our students are some of the most compassionate, hardworking and brave individuals I have ever met,” said Head of School, Lance Conrad, Ed.D. “Our Chargers are the reason why we’re excited to come to work each day; they are the epicenter of our professional lives. It’s really important to us that they realize this fact and we celebrate them.”

WBZ Channel 4 (CBS Boston) visited campus and produced a news report for their evening broadcast about this video project. Check out their story at: http://boston.cbslocal.com/2017/01/09/chapel-hill-chauncy-high-school-teachers-messages-praising-students/.

As part of the #InspirationVideo project, CH-CH is challenging others to pick one person this holiday season, and let them know how they have inspired you. The video reactions can be tagged with #InspirationVideo.

  • U.S. Senate Simulation at CH-CH

On October 28, 2016, Chapel Hill - Chauncy Hall students gathered in the CH-CH Commons to conduct the School’s first U.S. Senate simulation. The simulation was created by the history department; they wanted their students to see the inner workings of the country’s legislation process. History teacher Colin Meiselmen, said he wanted “the students to experience what it is like to be a legislator and to make changes to our country.”

Each student portrayed a republican or democrat who currently serves in the U.S. Senate. The students researched their senator to understand their positions regarding various topics, as well as to learn their voting history and relationship with their constituents. The students were then divided into sub-committee based upon their senator’s memberships. These sub-committees met during class time in the days leading up the simulation. Each student was required to propose a bill to their sub-committee and then attempt to have that bill pass in the senate during the full simulation. The students spent the simulation day voting on various bills that ranged from taxes on clean energy, to dispensing aid to refugees in Jordan. The simulation dealt with current issues while providing students new perspectives of the legislative process.

  • Nora Maybury ‘16

Interview with Nora Maybury '16 on Community

In 2014, Nora Maybury ‘16 successfully brought Relay for Life (benefiting the American Cancer Society) to Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall and established it as a new tradition for the School. In addition to this accomplishment, she was a member of the National Honor Society, a Cavalry Tour Guide, and served as student body president her senior year. We sat down to speak with Nora about Relay for Life and her time at CH-CH.

When did you become involved in Relay for Life? I first participated in Relay for Life when I was eight years old. My dad was fighting melanoma at the time, and the event was a good way to spend time with family and bring the community together. When I arrived at CH-CH, I was passionate about starting a team here.

Where did your spirit for charity come from? I feel as though I have always had the spirit, but it was at CH-CH where I was able to act on it, especially with all of the help I received. Here I was given an endless amount of support from the faculty and students, and it allowed me to turn my love of charity work into something real.

How was your CH-CH experience? CH-CH was a bit of a challenge for me when I first arrived. Over time, the School helped me become more confident, which allowed me to focus on my academics and take more Honors and AP courses. I loved the small class sizes at CH-CH because I never had to worry about not being heard in the classroom.

What have you taken away from your secondary school years? I am grateful I had the opportunity to come to CH-CH. It is unique in that I was encouraged to do things I didn’t know I could do, such as organizing a Relay for Life event here.

Nora began her first semester at Lewis & Clark College this fall.

Charger Classic Golf Outing a Success!

    Ben Rogers
On Friday, October 14th, CH-CH trustees, current and past parents, alumni, and friends enjoyed a beautiful fall day at Sandy Burr Country Club in Wayland at the Charger Classic Golf Outing. Participants enjoyed a challenging course and a great round of golf. In addition to competing for the longest drive and the shot hit closest to the pin, golfers competed for prizes at various holes by putting with a hockey stick, and hitting a drive with a vintage wooden club!

Faculty and staff were represented by golfers including Nanor Antreassian, Jim Bellanca, Lance Conrad, and Bill Gostylo. At the clubhouse reception, Chuck Black, P’10, Trustee, led an appeal to support Financial Aid at CH-CH.

As always, community volunteers were indispensable in making the day run smoothly. We would like to thank Chuck Black, P’10, Trustee for conducting the successful revenue enhancement piece, as well as our parent volunteers Jane Burns, P’19, Erin Duggan, P’20, Lisa Kane, P’18, Suzanne Loonie, P’17, Trustee, and Jenilee Ward, P’18 who monitored hole contests throughout the day. We would also like to thank CH-CH volunteers Jim Kaduboski for monitoring the hole-in-one car contest hole, Greg Abel for photographing the golfers and the action on the course and Janet Sachs for helping with check-out.

The event was tremendously successful and raised approximately $30,000 for financial aid which is a 30% increase from previous years! Thank you to all who contributed and supported this event!

We hope you can join us for next year’s Charger Classic Golf Outing scheduled for Friday, October 13, 2017.

CH-CH Unveils Newly Renovated Boys’ Dorm

    Video highlights: https://youtu.be/5Q9SFAVPTgk

As students arrived at Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall this September, there was excitement around the major renovation to Worcester Hall, the boys’ dormitory. The project was completed over the summer of 2016, and at the ribbon cutting on Thursday, September 22nd, the excitement was palpable.

“This a very important day,” said Board of Trustees Chair B.J. Rudman. “It’s about the students, and this renovation marks a milestone for Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall.”

Originally built in the early 1960’s, Worcester Hall has been a home away from home for hundreds of students over the years. During the past summer, Worcester Hall received a $1 million renovation that brought new life to the common living space while highlighting the natural surroundings, particularly Mill Pond.

“It looks like a completely new dorm,” said Worcester Hall resident Kyle Gomes ‘17. “And the new deck by the pond does a great job of getting people together outside.”

The renovation re-imagined and expanded the first-floor community space with floor-to-ceiling windows as well as an elevated deck extending to the water. A new second-floor lounge was built in the center of the dorm and intensely large windows were added to the stairwells overlooking the pond. The creation of a large outdoor green space with new landscaping also provides significant aesthetic improvements.

“We are excited to bring the natural light and views of the pond through the building,” said Head of School Lance Conrad. “This, along with the added community space, will make it a much more welcoming home for both our boarding students and dorm families.”

    Alumni Day - 2016

    Ben Rogers
On June 11, we welcomed alumni from Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall, Chapel Hill, Chauncy Hall, and Huntington School for Boys back to campus for Alumni Day. Alumni traveling from New York, New Jersey and points in between reconnected with former classmates, teachers, and friends. Guests included alumni from the classes of 1966 celebrating their 50th reunions to some of our most recent graduates from the Class of 2011 celebrating their 5th!

Alumni celebrating a milestone reunion enjoyed lunch with Head of School Lance Conrad, and joined other alumni at the BBQ that evening. Campus tours, a scavenger hunt, and great conversation completed the day.

Former faculty members Richard and Margaret Allen, Liz Gray, Peter Hendrickson, Ed McCarthy, Louisa Roberts, and Maryann Wyner mingled with colleagues and former students and were joined by current faculty and staff members Josh Bubar, Bill Gostylo, Sam Melanson ‘10, Janet Sachs, and Alice Solorow.

In his remarks during the BBQ, CH-CH board member and Alumni Council chair James Lipcon '97 described the impact of his CH-CH experience on his life and career and explained the ways he continues to give back his alma mater. In honor of Alumni Day, guests made gifts to support outdoor furniture for Worcester Hall.

If you were unable to attend Alumni Day but would still like to make a gift to support outdoor furniture for Worcester Hall, please go online at www.chch.org/donateonline and select “Other” in the dropdown menu and indicate “outdoor furniture for Worcester Hall” in the “notes to CH-CH” box. If you prefer, you may contact Director of Alumni Relations Ben Rogers directly at 781-314-0810 or brogers@chch.org.

Throughout the year, there are many opportunities for alumni to remain involved with CH-CH. The next time your travels take you to the Waltham area, please stop by the Alumni Relations Office where Director of Alumni Relations Ben Rogers would be pleased to host you on a campus tour and share some updates on School activities.

  • Class of 2016 Graduation!

On Saturday, June 4th, Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall School recognized the forty graduates of the Class of 2016 in its 188th commencement ceremony. Valedictorian Hannah Sarnie and Salutatorian Mark Nathin were honored and addressed their classmates. The commencement address was delivered by Dr. David Rosenthal, MD, senior physician at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

In her address to the Class of 2016, Valedictorian Hannah Sarnie stressed the value of work ethic and experiential learning over the pursuit of “good grades”. “Join a club sports team, an acapella group, start a tutoring program, or a writers’ workshop, apply to be an RA, or a tour guide,” said Sarnie. “These experiences will help develop long lasting, practical, and meaningful skills for life.”

Dr. Rosenthal discussed the compassion he has witnessed in the Class of 2016, as they brought the Relay for Life to campus, benefiting the American Cancer Society: “As you move on from CH-CH to your next phase, I do have some advice. Keep up your compassion, your caring and listen to your conscience.”

As Dr. Rosenthal discussed the events that altered his career path, ultimately leading to the field of hematology and oncology, he left the Class of 2016 with the following advice: “As you leave CH-CH, look for mentors, look for character defining moments. But most importantly, continue with the efforts you have demonstrated here.”

Head of School Dr. Lance Conrad closed the ceremony by highlighting the role teachers have played in the graduate’s development: “Our role as your faculty has been to push you to be alert, eager, empathic and intellectually capable young men and women.  We know what you can do.  We believe in you.  We have had the awesome responsibility to prepare you to take charge, to exercise every right and to fulfill every responsibility.  We hope that we have taught you to flourish and to spread your wings as far as they can reach.”

  • Spring Celebration Success!

Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall School held its 2nd Annual Spring Celebration and Auction on Saturday, May 7th, and successfully raised approximately $48,000 for faculty professional development.

After the Promenade on campus, student’s boarded coach buses to their Prom at the Sandy Burr Country Club, while parents checked in for the 2nd Annual Spring Celebration. With music from the Waltham Philharmonic Orchestra Chamber Group playing, parents laughed and talked with trustees, teachers, administrators, and other CH-CH families as they celebrated the end of the 2015-2016 school year. The Beaver Gymnasium was transformed for the evening, with displays of student’s artwork (with matching flowers), tables of silent auction items, and a collection of photos of each of our 40 teachers.

Teachers were the focus of the night, as all of the proceeds benefited their ongoing professional development. The goal set was to raise $40,000 for the 40 teachers, and this goal was exceeded with donations totaling approximately $48,000.

“It was fantastic to get all these families, trustees, faculty and staff together for one night to have fun and support a great cause,” said Interim Director of Development Ben Rogers. “Our Spring Celebration Planning Committee did such an amazing job that people are already talking about next year!”

Throughout the evening, teachers spoke to the impact professional development opportunities have on their classroom, and parents spoke to the transformations they have witnessed in their children.

Head of School, Dr. Lance Conrad, summed up the theme of the night in his opening address:

“At Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall, we have outstanding teachers that are the heart and soul of our school. They are here for one purpose and one purpose only, to make a difference in their students’ lives.”

The funds raised throughout the night will be used for ongoing professional development, increasing the impact that they make in the classroom every day.

David Rosenthal, MD to Address the Class of 2016

Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall School is excited to announce that David Rosenthal, MD will be the commencement speaker at its 188th Graduation Ceremony on Saturday, June 4th, 2016.

From legislation reform to patient services, Dr. Rosenthal, senior physician at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, has made a difference in the lives of thousands of cancer patients across New England and the United States.

Dr. Rosenthal is a past president of the American Cancer Society and continues to play an active role within the organization. Among his most enduring contributions while at the American Cancer Society was the instrumental role he played in bringing an American Cancer Society Hope Lodge to Boston.

Opened in 2008, the Hope Lodge helps thousands of cancer patients and their caregivers save millions of dollars in lodging costs when they travel for vital treatments. As the chairperson of the Massachusetts Coalition for a Healthy Future, Dr. Rosenthal was also responsible for leading the state’s innovative efforts to heighten tobacco control during early implementation of the tobacco tax.

For more than 20 years, Dr. Rosenthal had been the director and CEO of Harvard University Health Services and in 2000, Dr. Rosenthal was named medical director of the Leonard P. Zakim Center for Integrative Therapies at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The center’s mission is to integrate complementary therapies with conventional cancer treatments to best treat challenging cancers. Dr. Rosenthal is a 2012 recipient of the American Cancer Society Distinguished Achievement in Cancer Award, which recognized his career-spanning dedication to the fight against cancer and his exemplary volunteer service to the organization. • How Can Schools Keep Up With the Pace of Innovation?

As Bill Gates said, “The pace of innovation today is faster than ever.” For schools, this means there are always new and improving ways to engage students in the classroom, but this pace of innovation can become overwhelming for schools. What technology is right for our school? Will the teachers want to use this? How will it impact learning?

Seventeen Technology Integrationists recently converged at Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall School’s (CH-CH) Technology Unconference to discuss exactly these topics. Here are seven takeaways from the discussions that schools and teachers can put to use today to keep up with the rapid pace of technology:

    1. Be kind, rewind, reflect – Utilize the “1, 2, 3 method of reflection.” Gather feedback one day after an event and debrief two weeks later in order to be far enough away to be able to discuss it objectively. Finally, three months later re-visit the event and make any changes so it is even better the next time.

    1. Focus on one initiative at a time - Give yourself breathing room between initiatives. Throwing too many new things at your faculty at once inevitably causes initiative fatigue. Focus on one initiative at a time so that both you and your faculty can give it the attention it deserves. Putting the time and effort in making one initiative successful will instill a sense of confidence in your faculty and benefit future endeavors.

    1. Focus on your school’s mission and the impact on learning - Always focus on how new initiatives fit into school’s mission and vision. Your faculty will be far more likely to back a new initiative when they can clearly see how it will positively affect learning at your school.

    1. Remember to use your social network - You are not alone! Reach out to your fellow teachers and tech integrationists for advice, feedback, and validation. Don’t get stuck in your own bubble, and take the time to learn about all of the amazing initiatives your peers have embarked in other schools. Sometimes a fresh take on a problem or issue you are having is all it takes to make a breakthrough.

    1. Learn from other teachers - Don’t get attached to specific apps or programs. Be open to trying to new ways of doing things, even if you are used to the status quo. Never forget, your faculty is a wealth of innovation and creativity and often the best ways of using technology come from those using it in the classroom every day.

    1. Stay focused on the solution - No matter what you do, you will face at least some resistance. It is important to stay positive. It is essential to be solution-oriented in your approach as more often than not your faculty wants to find a solution, but may not have the time or expertise to find it.

    1. Remember the importance of unplugging - Cindy Ludlam, Dean of Faculty at Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall gave a presentation entitled “Wellness & Technology” at the unconference. She implores all teachers to be conscious of how technology can affect learning, stating that external technology can decrease awareness if we don’t balance it with our inner technology. As Nobel Laureate Herbert Simon said, “What information consumes is the attention of the recipients, hence a wealth of information creates a poverty of attention.”

Submitted by Jon Andruchow, CH-CH's Academic Technology & Innovation Integrationist. A graduate of Brown University, Jon has focused on the use of technology to empower both the teacher and student to think about learning in a different way.

  • CH-CH Production of Guys and Dolls

Winter Musical Donates $3,152 to Local Charity

The drama students of Chapel Hill – Chauncy Hall proved creativity, talent, and generosity were no strangers to one another. For three sold out shows, the winter musical production of Guys and Dolls took center stage with an aim to put smiles on the faces of both curious theatre patrons and young at-risk children in the local community. Having exceeded the forecast of ticket sales for the two evening shows and one matinee, the production raised $3,152 to benefit the Waltham Creative Start Child Center.

Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall students have been preparing for the production for months, and Bekah LaCoste has enjoyed seeing their growth. “It’s really exciting to see the kids on stage, in their glory, having a blast, laughing with each other, dancing their hearts out, singing their hearts out, and acting so well,” said LaCoste.

Waltham Creative Start provides high quality education and family services to a diverse population of children, ages 0 to 5 years, from at-risk families to ensure that their needs are met. This large act of generosity bears witness to our student’s core values as we look forward to our next production in the spring.

  • Coach Maguire Wins E.I.L. Wrestling Coach of the Year

The past few years have been exciting for the Charger Wrestling team, finishing with a record of 10-3 this season, sending four wrestlers to New England's, and sending two wrestlers to the National Tournament last season.  Coaches Conor Maguire and Scott Bloom are receiving some much-deserved recognition for their commitment to the wrestling program.  Coach Maguire has just been named the E.I.L. Wrestling Coach of the Year and Coach Bloom has been nominated for New England Wrestling Coach of the Year.

Both of these coaches are dedicated to the athlete's experience.  They strive to establish an environment that focuses on fun, improvement of skills and ultimately, excellence.

“They fought for me in every way they could, and I fought for them the best way I could,” said Nelson Andrade ’16. “I am extremely appreciative for what they have done for me and can honestly say that I would not have preferred any other coaches sitting on my corner of the mat.”

Coaches Maguire and Bloom complement each other nicely, recognizing and working off of each other's strengths for the betterment of the program.  Coach Maguire thanks Coach Bloom for being a "fantastic skills-based fountain of knowledge for our kids".  Our athletic program has been fortunate to have such an excellent pair of coaches working together.

Coach Bloom states, "Any time coaches receive recognition it is a reflection on how dedicated the athletes were and how hard they worked every day.  We had a great group of guys and we are excited about next season."

Congratulations to Coaches Maguire and Bloom on another outstanding season!

  • AP Environmental Science Solar Sun Challenge!

This week, students harnessed the power of the sun to make s’mores!

AP Environmental Science students used common materials (cardboard boxes, aluminum foil, pie pans, plastic bags and construction paper) to design solar ovens. They’ve been studying energy and agriculture, so this lab was a perfect way to experience the intersection of these important ideas. They noted that the most successful designs also capitalized in the greenhouse effect to trap and retain radiant thermal energy from the sun. They made s'mores and were able to melt chocolate within 10 minutes of sitting in the chilly February sun.

  • CH-CH Students Produce "Snowception" Snow Day Video

The announcement of a snow day is always a cheerful event for students, but the Digital Video class at Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall School in Waltham, MA, created even more excitement with the release of their snow day announcement video. The video, titled “Snowception”, places students in the dreams of their Head of School, Lance Conrad, with one goal, “convince him to call a snow day.” The video then traces Conrad’s dreams as he dresses as Adele to sing “Hello”, stars in his own 90’s sitcom, and ultimately faces off with actor Shia Labeouf.

The video was the creation of Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall School’s Digital Video class, where students worked for nearly two months, scripting, storyboarding, shooting and editing the short film.

“Once we started brainstorming ideas for the snow day video, it was clear that this was going to be something special,” said Matt Soule, Digital Video Teacher. “It was an ambitious project that required multiple locations, actors, green screens and lots of editing work, but they brought so much passion every day, and pulled together to complete it.”

When students approached Conrad with the request to wear a wig for the Adele sequence, he didn’t hesitate to say yes, and jump onboard with the project. “Calling a snow day is a tough part of my job,” said Conrad. “This is an opportunity for me to have fun with the students, and create something unique.”

Next, the Digital Video class plans to attend the New Hampshire Primaries to interview Presidential candidates and create their own news program.
